Our Story

In 2004, our journey with Monasterio del Viento began when we fulfilled a lifelong dream - acquiring a quaint single-story house on the enchanting island of Providencia. This dream was no ordinary aspiration; it was a passion that took root in the heart of the property's owner since his youth. Fascinated by Providencia from a young age, he dedicated his high school thesis to this pristine Caribbean gem. By 2006, our dedication to this dream manifested as we expanded the vacation property into two distinct homes, each standing proudly at three floors high. The transformation marked the inception of Monasterio del Viento's evolution into the luxurious haven it is today.

In 2010, we opened our doors to guests, introducing Monasterio del Viento as a boutique home rental. The charm of Providencia, with its remote authenticity, became the backdrop for a unique and unforgettable experience. In the aftermath of a Category 5 hurricane that struck the island in 2020, Monasterio del Viento underwent a comprehensive remodeling and refurbishment, which was completed in 2024.This refurbishment not only restored the property to its former glory but also enhanced its facilities. Now, as a family runned experience, we proudly present a harmonious blend of tradition and modern luxury.

The property was originally owned by Simón González Restrepo, the first governor of both San Andrés and Providencia island. Simón was not only a politician but also a famous writer, poet and an enthusiast of the occult sciences (astrology, alchemy, and natural magic). He was devoted to preserving the knowledge and practices of indigenous healers/shamans around the world and even organized the world's first congress of shamanism in 1975. His involvement in the occult sciences granted him the famed name of "El Brujo Simon" (simon the witch/wizard). Despite his intriguing nickname, he was beloved for his charismatic nature, commitment to environmental policies, and poetic works that left Providencia with several famous short stories and well- known monikers such as, "the Sea of 7 Colors."

Simon, resided in Monasterio del Viento for many years and named the property the name it proudly carries today. "Monasterio del Viento," translating to "Monastery of the Wind," encapsulates the essence of its location – the windiest point of Providencia. Although the house is larger than it once was it still retains the original charm and continues to echo with the magic and enchanting winds that initially captivated Simon's heart.
